Breadcrumb Schema Generator
Breadcrumb schema tells Google where a page sits in your site hierarchy. When Google accepts it, the plain URL in the search result is replaced by a readable trail such as Home > Guides > Backlinks. Build the JSON-LD below, then validate it before publishing.
The generator runs in your browser — enable JavaScript to use it.
What Breadcrumb schema needs
Required properties
itemListElement— The ordered list of steps in the trail.position— Starts at 1 and increments with no gaps. Out-of-order positions invalidate the whole trail, not just one step.name— The label shown for that step.
Recommended properties
item— The URL for that step. Google treats the final item as the current page, so its URL may be omitted.
Will this show a rich result?
Breadcrumb markup is eligible for the Breadcrumb trail in search results. Google requires an ordered itemListElement of ListItem entries, each with position and name. The trail must reflect the real path to the page.
Mistakes that break Breadcrumb markup
- A trail that does not match the real path to the page. Breadcrumbs must reflect how a user actually reached the page. An invented hierarchy is treated as misleading markup.
- Positions that do not start at 1, or skip a number. Number every step consecutively from 1. A gap invalidates the trail rather than dropping one step.
- Multiple trails merged into one list. A page can legitimately have more than one breadcrumb trail, but each must be a separate complete BreadcrumbList — not a single merged one.
Breadcrumb schema questions
What is breadcrumb schema?
Breadcrumb schema is structured data describing where a page sits within a site hierarchy, so search engines can show a readable trail in place of the raw URL.
Does the last breadcrumb need a URL?
No. Google treats the final item as the current page, so its URL can be omitted. Including it is not an error, but it is unnecessary.
Can a page have more than one breadcrumb trail?
Yes. A page reachable by several routes can carry multiple BreadcrumbList objects, each complete in itself. Do not merge them into one list.
